I love Roger Deakins. He is probably my favorite cinematographer. I love the way he shot Jarhead. I love the blown out bleached look of the desert scenes. I also find it very impressive that Deakins didn’t use any lighting rigs, bounce light or diffusion in 95% of those scenes. They still look amazing. Also the night scenes where the fires are burning and everything is covered in oil is one of my favorite visuals of all time. Those images that stick in your head. The shot of the horse running out of the darkness still haunts me years after I saw the movie. Read more about Deakins’ process and his approach to shooting Jarhead.

I’ve been looking around your blog and am impressed by the material here. I work the nightshift at my job and it is boring. I’ve been coming right here for the previous couple nights and reading. I just wanted to let you know that I have been enjoying what I’ve seen and I look forward to seeing more.
This is one of Deakins’ finest works. I’m surprised it wasn’t even nominated at the Academy Awards for Best Cinematography. Way better than both ”Brokeback Mountain”’s and ”Good Night and Good Luck”’s cinematography.
