It’s one thing to shoot compelling images when you are filming a war scene with smoke and explosions and tanks and dirty faces. Or a sweeping vista of Monument Valley with rugged frontiersmen on horses. Its another thing altogether to shoot a good looking scene in a middle class home. You have very little to work with. You have to make something look good/natural that you’ve probably seen every single day of your life. Deakins did a fine job with this film and I think it deserves to be studied. Enjoy.

This could have been shot by anyone. Why hire Roger Deakins, one of the most talented cinematographers working today, to shoot just a bunch of grey, nondescript office cubicles? It just doesn’t make any sense…
And yet it’s beautifully shot. Only Deakins could have pulled this off.

Your standards for “beautifully shot” must be pretty low…
To my eyes, it looks like any TV movie of the week (don’t worry, i blame the mediocre director for this, not Roger).
This ain’t no American Beauty, i can tell you that much…
