A Message To All My Visitors

Flattr this

To all my visitors:

I am at a bit of a cross roads; I have very much enjoyed keeping up my blog over the past 5 years and from the encouraging comments that I’ve received, it seems that others have enjoyed viewing it.  However, my computer that I use for processing blu-rays has died and without it, I can’t continue to post more movies to my site.

So, this is an opportunity for you the visitor to speak.  If you’ve enjoyed the blog and find the posts useful, please consider donating to my new computer.  I am looking to raise $2900 by the end of the year.  If I don’t raise that much, I will take it as an indicator that it is time to move on to other endeavors.

This has been a rewarding experience for me, and whatever the outcome, I am glad that I’ve had the opportunity to do this and share a little something with you all.

Thanks for following,
Evan E. Richards

Damn! That’s a real bummer. As a film student, I really value this site and always look forward to which film I can learn from next, but of course being a film student means I can barely afford to pay for the gas it takes to get around LA. But if I get this new job I applied for, I’ll celebrate by contributing!

Sucks that we won’t be getting any new posts for the rest of the year though…

I wish I could do some more posts right now, but I just don’t have the equipment to make it possible. It’s too bad because I had a bunch of films ready to go.
Maybe some day. Thanks for visiting the blog though! Glad you are finding it useful.

Well, the best thing you could do would be to tell everyone you know who might find a website like mine useful. Spread the word. Thanks!!

Perhaps you should use Flattr instead of Paypal Donations? I donated anyway.

    Keep it rolling.

Ive come here a few times and I love the dedication to the art and what you do is awesome. I find it most useful when I don’t feel like sitting through a film and doing my own screen caps. However I just built a beast of a machine for under 1500 that can make an animated feature film with considerably decent render times….now that doesnt include a blu-ray player but maybe if you itemize your expenses and explain a little better why you need $2900 (you shopping for a Mac?) you might be more successful. I myself just graduated and just joined the industry and education isn’t cheap. I’d help if I could but Im struggling at the moment. Cheers Evan, I hope you reach your goal.

This is a very reasonable question and one I’d be happy to answer.

I do use a mac. The process I currently use for capturing my screenshots can only be done on a mac (as far as I know). When I rip a bluray the format can only be read in QuickTime pro (which is the software I use for capturing the screenshots) with a plugin call “Perian”. And Perian unfortunately can only be used on a mac. I’m hoping to post some much more in-depth analysis and video studies soon and the only video software I own and am proficient in is Final Cut Pro. I do all my sorting and managing of my screenshots in Lightroom as well so Apple is kind of where I need to go. I have several thousands of dollars of software for the Mac and at this point it would be pretty expensive and time consuming to switch back to a PC and come up with a new workflow.

My previous computer was a 15″ MacBook pro from 2008 but after 5 years the logicboard died (or so I was told by the folks at apple). I would like to get a comparable computer. My last mac slowed me down a lot because the monitor wasn’t even HD resolution (I think it was 1440×900 resolution) and it’s hard to work with HD stills when you can’t even fit the entire image on your screen. So when MacBook pro with a retina display came out I thought “Wow! That’s the ticket right there!”. So that would be ideal. The cheapest 15″ retina display MacBook pro is $2199. The other $700 I would use to upgrade my web hosting. I have been getting completely valid complaints that my site is very sluggish and I’d like to do something about that. Initially my “Message to my visitors” post was about a page and a half long explaining in detail what I needed for funds. When I asked my wife to proofread it she said “This is way too long. No one’s going to read all this. Just say you need it for a computer. You don’t need to go into all that detail”. So that’s what I did.

Thanks for visiting my site. Don’t worry that you are struggling at the moment. We’ve all been there. I’m pretty much there myself at the moment or else I wouldn’t be asking people for donations. I’m extremely glad you’re finding the site useful. And I’m hoping to make it much more useful in the near future. If you could just tell everyone you know that would find this site useful that would be extremely valuable to me. Thanks for your message and your support! ~ Evan

  • Hey Evan – thanks for keeping this site running. I really enjoy all your posts – it’s a great reference. I made a small donation and shared the link.

I’ve wondered before if you automate the choice of stills from the movies, or if you have some process that helps you? Or is it just as time consuming as I imagine?

Best of luck with your fundraising.

I wish there was an automated way to choose. I automate pulling about 1200-2000 stills from a movie, and then manually go through and weed out the ones with motion blur, similar shots etc. Each film takes me between 1-4 hours depending on how long it is. Thanks for spreading the word and thanks for the donation!

  • Hey Evan!

Just wanted to say I LOVE your site. I am a concept artist and illustrator currently working in the game industry. Myself and a countless number of my fellow painters refer back to your site and use your screenshots for reference all the time. Anything from just looking at awesome color palettes, cinematic shots, to studying the screenshots for mood and composition to doing quick studies at lunch of the screenshots to keep our chops fresh. Ive donated and shared this link to my network on facebook, hopefully you’ll get some more hits from there.

Thanks again man! This blog is an great and irreplaceable resource and I would hate to see it go.

Best of luck to getting the new laptop, I myself am saving up for a new mac, as my current laptop is on its last leg.

Thanks so much for the kind words Dawn. I think I’ll be back up and running very soon. I have a whole bunch of movies I’m going to be posting very soon.
Spread the word! The more people who know about this site and find it useful the better.

      Thanks!
