The Cinematography of “The Tree of Life” (2011)
Cinematographer: Emmanuel Lubezki
Won the 2011 Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival
I don’t know what to make of this film. Not certain I really understand much about it. But it has some amazing cinematography. Check out the American Cinematographer article about it. http://www.theasc.com/ac_magazine/August2011/TheTreeofLife/page1.php

Was so surprised when I found out that this was shot with all natural/ambient light…on celluloid.
I was impressed enough when I thought it was shot digitally, but on film…just wow.

Well film generally looks much more cinematic than digital (and with the log profiles everyone is trying to replicate the look of film). It also has a very high dynamic range which allows for under/overexposure and corrections during grading.
